Understanding Basic Human Anatomy for Drawing
Before you pick up a pencil, it helps to know what you're looking at. Human anatomy is the study of how the human body is structured—the bones, muscles, organs, and how they all fit together. When you draw people, understanding this structure underneath the skin makes your drawings look more believable and natural.
The human skeleton contains 206 bones in adults. These bones create the framework that gives your body its shape and movement. When you draw, the skeleton is your foundation. Think of it like the frame of a house—everything else is built on top of it. Even if you're drawing a person wearing heavy clothing, the skeleton underneath determines where joints bend, how tall they stand, and what positions they can move into.
The human body has roughly 640 muscles. You don't need to memorize every single one, but learning the major muscle groups helps tremendously. Large muscles like the deltoids (shoulders), pectoralis (chest), rectus abdominis (abs), and quadriceps (thighs) create visible shapes on the body. When a person moves or tenses, these muscles change shape and create shadows and highlights that make drawings look three-dimensional.

This is a crucial proportion—if you place eyes too high or too low, the face immediately looks wrong. The distance between the two eyes is roughly equal to the width of one eye. The ears, while often overlooked, extend from approximately the eyebrow line to the bottom of the nose. The nose sits roughly in the middle of the face, and the mouth sits about one-third of the way from nose to chin.
The face can be divided into thirds vertically: from hairline to eyebrows, from eyebrows to nose tip, and from nose tip to chin. These three sections create balanced proportions. While faces vary, this general framework helps you place features correctly. The jawline angles inward toward the chin, and this angle differs between males and females—male jaws tend to be squarer and more pronounced, while female jaws tend to be more tapered and rounded.
