Raleigh bicycles, a British manufacturer founded in 1888, used a different system. Their codes combined letters and numbers that referenced production year and quarter—a Raleigh marked "F23" might indicate a specific week in the 1970s or 1980s, depending on the letter scheme used that decade.

Beyond the serial number, look for manufacturer decals—the decorative labels affixed to the frame. These painted or sticker-applied logos often changed year to year, and the style, font, and color of lettering help narrow down the production era. A curved Schwinn script in gold lettering differs noticeably from the bold block letters used on 1970s models. Japanese manufacturers like Fuji, Nishiki, and Panasonic regularly updated their decal designs. Chrome and plating condition affects both appearance and value. High-quality vintage bikes often featured chrome-plated components and fork blades. The drivetrain (chainring, chain, cogs, and derailleurs) tells a detailed story about the bike's usage and maintenance history. A dry, rusted chain indicates long storage without care. A perfectly preserved, slightly stiff chain suggests the bike spent years in a garage but wasn't ridden heavily. Chainrings can be evaluated by spinning them—they should rotate smoothly without binding. Cantilever brakes, which became standard in the 1980s, offer better modulation and clearance for wider tires. Dual-pivot brakes represent a mid-1990s advancement.
