What Is Dementia and Why Prevention Matters
Dementia is not a single disease but a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily life. The most common type is Alzheimer's disease, which accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. Other types include vascular dementia, which occurs after stroke or reduced blood flow to the brain, and Lewy body dementia, which involves abnormal protein deposits in brain cells.
According to the Alzheimer's Association, approximately 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older live with Alzheimer's dementia as of 2023. This number is projected to grow to nearly 13.8 million by 2060 if current trends continue. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that over 55 million people have dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases diagnosed each year.
Understanding dementia matters because research increasingly shows that brain health in midlife and early older age can influence dementia risk later. Cognitive reserve helps explain why some people with significant brain damage show fewer dementia symptoms than others. A person with higher cognitive reserve—built through education, cognitive engagement, and mental stimulation—may have more brain connections and greater flexibility, allowing the brain to work around damage. This does not prevent damage but may delay when symptoms appear.

Even prehypertension (slightly elevated blood pressure) may begin affecting the brain, so monitoring blood pressure regularly—starting in your 40s or earlier if you have risk factors—is important.
Diabetes significantly raises dementia risk, particularly Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. High blood sugar levels damage blood vessels and promote inflammation throughout the body, including in the brain. People with type 2 diabetes have approximately 50 to 60 percent higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease compared to people without diabetes. Importantly, managing blood sugar through diet, physical activity, and medication when needed may reduce this risk.
Cholesterol also influences brain health. However, continuing to learn throughout life appears to offer additional protection. A study following people over 21 years found that those who engaged in cognitive activities like reading, writing, doing puzzles, or attending educational classes had significantly slower rates of cognitive decline.
Mental stimulation works through multiple mechanisms. Learning new information requires the brain to form new neural connections and reorganize existing networks. This process, called neuroplasticity, maintains brain flexibility and may help the brain compensate for age-related changes. Additionally, cognitively demanding activities increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports neuron survival and growth.
Different types of cognitive activities may offer different benefits. Learning a new language engages multiple brain regions and appears to be particularly protective.
