Some browsers let you set up automatic clearing—for example, clearing all cookies and history every time you close the browser.

Additionally, websites cannot store persistent cookies that would normally be used to recognize you on future visits.

However, private mode has important limitations that many people misunderstand. Private mode does not hide your activity from your internet service provider. Your ISP can still see which websites you visit because they provide your internet connection. The websites you visit can still see that you're visiting them and can still track your activity while you're on their site. Your employer (if you're using a work computer) or school (if you're on a school network) can still see your browsing activity through their network monitoring systems.

Private mode also doesn't prevent malware or phishing attacks. Your downloads are still visible to your ISP, and the files themselves remain on your computer even after you close the private window. If a website has a security vulnerability or if you download malicious software, private mode won't protect you.

The practical use of private mode is primarily for local privacy—preventing the browser from storing a record that someone else with physical access to your computer could find. It's useful when using a shared computer, such as a library computer or a family device. It's also useful when you want to log into multiple accounts on the same website (since cookies won't persist, you won't be automatically logged in).
