The time signature, shown as a fraction at the beginning of a piece, tells you how many beats are in each measure and what note value gets one beat. A whole step is two semitones, and a half step is one semitone. If you start a major scale on C and follow this pattern, you get the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C—all white keys on a piano with no sharps or flats. The minor scale comes in three forms: natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor.
