Developing smooth clutch control involves three main techniques:

The acceleration process involves finding the right balance between clutch release and gas pedal pressure. Many beginners focus too much on the clutch and not enough on the gas. A general guideline is that by the time your foot has fully released the clutch pedal, you should have increased engine speed (RPM) by approximately 1,000 to 1,500 revolutions per minute from idle. For most cars, idle speed is around 700-800 RPM, so you might be aiming for 1,500-2,300 RPM by the time the clutch is fully engaged. This number increases slightly as you practice and develop your feel for the engine. The car will accelerate smoothly if you match the engine speed to the wheel speed correctly.

Shifting to higher gears occurs once you have reached the appropriate engine speed. For most cars, shifting points are approximately:
