The foundation of reading music starts with the staff, which consists of five horizontal lines. These lines and the spaces between them represent different musical notes and pitches. Each line and space has a specific name that depends on what instrument you're playing and what clef symbol appears at the beginning of the staff. The staff is similar to a graph—the higher a note sits on the staff, the higher the pitch sounds when played.

At the very beginning of every piece of sheet music, you'll notice a clef symbol. The two most common clefs are the treble clef (which looks like a fancy G with two dots) and the bass clef (which resembles a backwards C with two dots). The treble clef is used for higher-pitched instruments like flutes, violins, and trumpets. The bass clef is used for lower-pitched instruments like cellos, tuba, and bass. The octave concept is also important here. When you reach the note G at the top of the treble clef staff and continue upward, the next A starts a new octave—the notes are the same letter but sound higher in pitch. The same principle applies when moving downward. This is why musicians say music is cyclical; the pattern of A through G repeats throughout the entire range of every instrument.

Rests are symbols that represent silence in music. Just as notes have different durations, rests do too. A whole rest looks like a small rectangle hanging below the second line from the top and lasts four beats of silence. A half rest sits on the middle line and lasts two beats. A quarter rest looks like a stylized Z or lightning bolt and lasts one beat. An eighth rest resembles a quarter rest but has a flag on it and lasts half a beat.

Time signatures appear at the beginning of a piece of music, right after the clef symbol. They look like fractions, with one number stacked on top of another. The top number tells you how many beats are in each measure. The bottom number tells you what kind of note gets one beat. The most common time signature is 4/4, meaning there are four beats per measure and a quarter note gets one beat. In 3/4 time (common in waltzes), there are three beats per measure. In 6/8 time, there are six beats per measure and an eighth note gets one beat.

Practical takeaway: Write out several measures of music using different note values. For example, fill a measure in 4/4 time with four quarter notes, then try two half notes, then one whole note. A sharp symbol looks like a pound sign (#) and raises a note's pitch by one half-step. For example, C-sharp (written as C#) sounds slightly higher than a regular C. A flat symbol looks like a lowercase "b" and lowers a note's pitch by one half-step. D-flat (written as Db) sounds slightly lower than a regular D. A natural symbol looks like a square with lines extending up and down and cancels out any sharp or flat that came before it in that measure.

The piano keyboard provides a clear visual representation of half-steps. If you look at a piano, you'll see white keys and black keys. The white keys represent the natural notes (A through G), while the black keys represent the sharp and flat notes in between. There are no black keys between E and F or between B and C, which means E-sharp is actually F, and B-sharp is actually C. Similarly, C-flat is actually B, and F-flat is actually E. Understanding this prevents confusion when reading music.

Key signatures appear right after the clef symbol and before the time signature. They indicate which notes should be played as sharps or flats throughout an entire piece unless otherwise indicated. Rather than writing a sharp or flat before every single C or F in a piece, composers write one key signature that applies to the entire composition. For example, if a piece is in the key of G major, every F in that piece is automatically F-sharp unless marked otherwise. This makes sheet music cleaner and easier to read.
