Most vehicles use a disc brake system on the front wheels, and many use disc brakes on all four wheels. Inside the wheel, you'll find the brake caliper, which houses the brake pads. The caliper is essentially a clamp that squeezes the pads onto the rotor. When brake fluid pressure builds up in the system, it pushes pistons inside the caliper, forcing the pads to grip the rotor tightly.

Brake pads wear down over time because of the constant friction they experience. A typical set of brake pads lasts between 25,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on your driving habits, vehicle weight, and brake system design. Rotors also wear down, though they typically last longer than pads. When you press the brake pedal and hear a grinding noise, it usually means your pads have worn completely away, and metal is now rubbing directly on the rotor. This causes damage that makes rotor replacement necessary.

You can check your brake pad thickness by looking through the wheel. Most pads should be at least one-quarter inch thick. If they're thinner than that, replacement is needed soon. Some vehicles have wear sensors—small metal tabs that make a squealing sound when pads get thin, warning you it's time to replace them.

You should also have brake fluid on hand—typically DOT 3 or DOT 4, depending on what your vehicle uses. Check your owner's manual or the master cylinder cap to see which type you need. Brake cleaner spray helps remove dust and debris from the brake assembly. Have clean rags or shop towels available for wiping parts and cleaning your hands.

Safety equipment is not optional. You must wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from brake dust and flying debris. Brake dust can contain asbestos in older vehicles, so wearing a dust mask or respirator is important. Nitrile gloves protect your hands from brake fluid, which can damage skin and paint. Steel-toed boots protect your feet if something heavy falls. Work gloves provide additional protection when handling metal parts and hot components.

Before you start, make sure you have a clean, level work area with good lighting. A garage or driveway works well. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for your vehicle's weight. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to prevent rolling.

Place jack stands under the frame near the jack point and lower the vehicle onto them. The vehicle should be supported by the stands, not the jack, during your entire work session.

Now finish removing the lug bolts by hand and set them aside in a safe place where they won't roll away. Remove the wheel and set it aside upright to prevent damage to the rim. You now have clear access to the brake assembly. Take a moment to visually inspect everything. Look for leaking fluid around the caliper, cracks in the rotor, or excessive rust buildup.

You'll see the brake caliper mounted to the rotor assembly. The caliper is held in place by bolts that run through the back of the caliper into a mounting bracket. Some vehicles have the caliper mounted from the front, others from the back—your vehicle's design will be obvious once you see it. There may also be a small anti-rattle clip or shim attached to the caliper that you'll need to remove carefully.

Before you touch anything, spray the entire brake assembly with brake cleaner to remove brake dust. This dust accumulates from pad wear and can contain harmful particles. Let the cleaner dry completely. The cleaner also helps you see all the parts more clearly and ensures you don't accidentally trap dust under new components.

Removing Old Brake Pads and Rotors

Carefully slide the caliper away from the rotor. The caliper is heavy and contains brake fluid lines, so support it properly with a wire hook or bungee cord to prevent it from hanging by the brake line, which could damage the line and create a brake system failure. Never let the caliper dangle freely.

With the caliper out of the way, you can now remove the brake pads. They typically slide out easily or may require gentle tapping with a rubber mallet. Note which pad is on which side—the outside pad (facing the wheel) and the inside pad may be slightly different, and some brake pad sets include wear sensors that must go on specific sides.

Once the pads are removed, you're ready to take off the rotor. The rotor is held onto the wheel hub by the wheel bolts you removed earlier, or sometimes by a small set screw. If there's a set screw, remove it with a screwdriver. Grasp the rotor and pull it straight toward you. It may require some wiggling side to side as you pull. If it's stuck from rust or corrosion, tap it gently with a rubber mallet around the edges to break the bond.

Inspect the rotor as you remove it. Look at both the front and back surfaces. They should be smooth and mostly flat. If you see deep grooves, cracks, or a lip where the rotor has worn unevenly, the rotor needs replacement. Even if the rotor looks acceptable, measure its thickness with a micrometer or caliper if you have one. Compare this to the minimum thickness specification in your owner's manual
