This process typically takes between two to eight weeks depending on the plant species and environmental conditions.

Different types of plants respond better to cuttings taken at different times of year. Softwood cuttings, taken from new green growth during spring and summer, root relatively quickly, often within two to four weeks. Semi-hardwood cuttings, taken in mid to late summer from partially mature growth, take about four to six weeks. You can enhance water propagation success by placing your jar in bright, indirect light at temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid direct sunlight, which can heat the water too much and promote algae growth. Some people add a small amount of liquid fertilizer to the water once roots begin developing, using about one-quarter the recommended strength. This provides minimal nutrition as the developing roots begin their work, though it's not strictly necessary for successful propagation.

Make a hole in the soil with a pencil or your finger, then gently insert the cutting so that the lower leaves are just above the soil surface. Firm the soil gently around the cutting so it stands upright. You can place several cuttings in one pot as long as their leaves don't overlap significantly.

Create a humid environment, which reduces water loss from the cutting and encourages root formation. You can do this by placing a clear plastic bag or plastic dome over the pot, creating a mini-greenhouse. Alternatively, you can place the pot on a tray and cover it with a clear plastic container or lid. Check the soil moisture every two to three days—it should remain moist but not soaked. If condensation builds up too much, lift the cover briefly to allow some air circulation and prevent fungal issues.
