The cutting method works because a section of the parent tree's stem contains the biological material needed to develop roots and grow into a complete plant. When you remove a cutting from a healthy fig tree, the cut end responds to the wound by beginning cellular activity that can lead to root formation. Fig trees naturally produce a substance called auxin at the cut surface, which encourages root development. This biological process is why fig cuttings have success rates ranging from 50 to 80 percent, depending on the conditions and techniques used.

There are different types of cuttings you can take from fig trees, classified by the maturity of the wood. Hardwood cuttings come from fully mature, woody branches and are typically taken in late fall or winter when the tree is dormant. Softwood cuttings are taken from new, tender growth in spring. Semi-hardwood cuttings, taken in mid-to-late summer, fall between these two categories. Each type has different success rates and timing requirements, which makes understanding the differences important for planning your propagation timeline.

However, they're more delicate and require immediate attention after cutting. Softwood cuttings should be 4 to 6 inches long and taken from the newest growth at the branch tips. Semi-hardwood cuttings taken in July and August represent a middle ground. These cuttings come from growth that's hardened slightly but isn't fully mature. They often root faster than hardwood cuttings but are more forgiving than softwood cuttings. Take 6 to 8 inch cuttings from current year's growth, choosing pieces with firm but still-flexible stems. Semi-hardwood cuttings typically take 4 to 8 weeks to develop roots, making them a reliable option for summer propagation.

Always use clean, sharp pruning tools when harvesting cuttings. Dull tools crush the stem tissue, damaging the delicate cells needed for root development. After cutting, place your cuttings in a plastic bag to keep them moist, and work with them immediately or store them in a cool place for no more than a few days. The faster you can get cuttings into a rooting medium, the better your success rate will be.

Rooting hormones are available in powder, liquid, or gel formulations at most garden centers.

If using powder rooting hormone, moisten the bottom inch of the cutting slightly, then dip it into the powder, coating the cut end thoroughly. Remove excess powder by gently tapping the cutting. For liquid rooting hormones, prepare the solution according to package directions and soak the bottom of the cutting for the recommended time, typically 10 to 30 seconds. Gel formulations can be applied directly by dipping or spreading with a small brush. The key is ensuring the hormone contacts the cut surface where roots will emerge.

Some gardeners prepare their cuttings by making a small cut along one side of the stem just below the bottom node. This technique, called wounding, increases the surface area where roots can develop and can boost success rates, particularly for difficult-to-root plants. For fig cuttings, light wounding may help, though it's not essential since figs root relatively readily. Make only a shallow cut about one-quarter inch deep; you don't want to damage the structural integrity of the cutting.

Handle prepared cuttings carefully, as bruising or damaging them will reduce success. Avoid touching the rooting hormone-coated end, which could remove the hormone.
