The Nano-SIM, technically 4FF, is the smallest at 12.3 by 8.8 millimeters and has been the standard for most new phones since around 2012. iPhone 5 and later models use Nano-SIM cards. Most current Android phones, including Samsung Galaxy models, also use Nano-SIM. When you get a new phone today, it will almost certainly require a Nano-SIM card. Finally, eSIM is a newer technology that represents a shift away from physical cards entirely. An eSIM is a virtual SIM embedded in your phone's hardware, and your wireless provider provisions it remotely through software. Many newer phones now include eSIM capability, sometimes alongside a physical SIM slot.

Beyond physical size, there are also technological differences in how SIM cards function. The technology standard has progressed through several generations. Older SIM cards ran on 2G networks, while newer SIM cards support 3G, 4G LTE, and 5G networks. When you request a SIM card from a carrier, they will typically provide one that supports current network speeds. However, the SIM card itself doesn't limit your speed as much as the phone and the network do.
