While these amounts seem modest compared to beef, poultry provides quality protein, B vitamins, and selenium along with iron. Poultry is often leaner than red meat and may fit better into various dietary patterns.

Seafood represents an excellent iron source, with some varieties providing exceptional amounts. Oysters and clams rank highest, with oysters delivering approximately 5.5 milligrams of iron per 3-ounce serving—more than double the amount in beef. Clams provide about 24 milligrams of iron per 3-ounce serving, making them one of the richest food sources of iron available. Other fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines provide 0.8 to 1.5 milligrams of iron per 3-ounce serving. Seafood also provides omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, and vitamin D, making it a nutrient-dense choice.

Eggs contain moderate amounts of iron—about 1 milligram per large egg—though the iron absorption from eggs is less efficient than from meat. However, eggs also contain proteins and nutrients that support overall health. Full-fat dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt contain minimal iron and should not be relied upon as iron sources, though they provide calcium and other nutrients.
