The remaining types are considered low-risk and typically cause no serious health problems. Some low-risk types cause genital warts, which are benign growths that appear on or around the genitals.

The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during sexual activity. This includes vaginal, anal, and oral sex. HPV can spread even when an infected person has no visible symptoms or warts. A person can carry the virus for years without knowing they have it. Importantly, HPV does not spread through blood, saliva, sharing food, or other casual contact methods.

However, CIN2 and CIN3 are more likely to progress to cancer if untreated, so providers usually recommend procedures to remove the abnormal tissue.

The most common procedure for removing precancerous tissue is loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), also called loop excision or cone biopsy. During this procedure, a healthcare provider uses a thin wire loop heated with electrical current to remove the area of abnormal tissue. The procedure can be performed in an outpatient clinic setting with local anesthesia. Another option is a cold knife conization, where a healthcare provider uses a scalpel to remove a cone-shaped section of cervical tissue. Both procedures can be used for both diagnosis and treatment.

Laser conization is another treatment option that uses a laser beam to remove abnormal tissue. Some healthcare providers may recommend hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) in specific cases, particularly for CIN3 or if abnormal changes persist after previous treatments.
