Deglet Noor trees are somewhat hardier than Medjool varieties and tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, though they still require warm climates. They produce fruit within 3-5 years and yield 100-150 pounds annually at maturity.

For home growers in slightly cooler zones, the Barhi date offers advantages. These small, caramel-flavored dates can be eaten fresh from the tree when they reach their golden-brown stage. Barhi palms are somewhat more cold-tolerant than other varieties and can survive brief freezes. They produce fruit relatively quickly, often within 3-4 years.

Less common but viable options include the Zahidi date, which is drought-resistant and produces smaller but very sweet dates, and the Khadrawy variety, which produces soft dates prized for their texture.
