The foods you eat provide the raw materials your bones need. Think of your diet as your body's construction supply. Fatty fish are among the best dietary sources of vitamin D. Three ounces of cooked salmon contains about 450 to 570 IU of vitamin D, depending on whether it's wild or farmed. Mackerel and herring also provide substantial amounts. Egg yolks contain smaller amounts—one large egg provides about 40 IU. Mushrooms are unique among plant foods because they produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight; some varieties can contain 450 IU or more per serving. Fortified milk and plant-based milk alternatives typically contain 100 IU per cup.

Many people in North America, Europe, and other regions don't get enough vitamin D from sun exposure and food alone. This is particularly true for people who live far from the equator or spend limited time outdoors. Some individuals may need supplementation, which is something to discuss with a healthcare provider who can test vitamin D levels.
