The most frequent issue people face is imbalance in their compost mixture. Compost requires both carbon-rich materials (called "browns") and nitrogen-rich materials (called "greens"). The ideal ratio is roughly 3 parts brown to 1 part green by volume, though some systems work with a 2:1 ratio. When this balance tips too far in either direction, decomposition slows dramatically or stops entirely.

Many beginners don't realize that their compost pile needs oxygen. The decomposition process relies on aerobic bacteria and fungi that require air. A pile that becomes too compacted or too wet will shift to anaerobic decomposition, where different organisms take over. This process produces foul odors similar to rotting eggs and can take much longer to produce finished compost.

Moisture content is another critical factor that often goes wrong. Your pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge—moist but not soggy. Too much moisture displaces oxygen and creates those awful smells. Too little moisture slows decomposition to a crawl. Most people either add water when they shouldn't or fail to add any water at all, especially in dry climates.

Composting diseased plants can spread those diseases to your garden when you use the finished compost. It's safer to dispose of visibly diseased plant material in trash rather than your compost pile.

Weeds with seeds are another significant problem. If your pile doesn't reach temperatures of at least 140°F (60°C) consistently—which most home piles don't—weed seeds will survive and sprout when you spread your finished compost in your garden. The same applies to invasive plants like bindweed or morning glory.

Treated wood, glossy paper, and synthetic materials should never enter compost. Treated wood contains chemicals that persist through decomposition. Glossy or colored paper often contains inks and coatings that don't break down and can introduce toxins. Plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers simply won't decompose at all.

Pet waste from carnivores (dogs and cats) carries harmful pathogens and parasites that survive composting. These can contaminate vegetables you grow. Only herbivore manure—from horses, rabbits, or chickens—should be composted for gardens that will produce food.

To fix a waterlogged pile, you can add more brown materials to absorb moisture. Dry leaves, shredded cardboard, or sawdust will help. You can also turn the pile more frequently to encourage evaporation. If your pile is in a location that receives rain, consider adding a cover—not a sealed lid, but something that sheds water while allowing air flow.

Piles that are too dry decompose very slowly. If you live in a dry climate or your pile is exposed to sun and wind, materials may dry out faster than they break down. Check your pile by squeezing a handful. If it crumbles and no moisture appears, you need to water it. Add water when you turn the pile, or simply spray it with a hose if the pile is accessible.

Drainage is another consideration that beginners often overlook. If your compost pile sits directly on clay soil or concrete, water can't drain away. Moisture accumulates at the bottom, creating an anaerobic environment even if the top of the pile seems fine. Using a bin with drainage holes, or ensuring your pile sits on permeable ground, helps prevent this problem.

Indoor worm bins (vermicomposting) are particularly sensitive to moisture issues. These bins produce "compost tea" that needs somewhere to go. If the bin doesn't have a spigot to drain excess liquid, it will become waterlogged. Many people find that indoor worm bins fail because they didn't account for moisture management before starting.

Practical takeaway: Test your pile's moisture weekly by squeezing a handful. Water should not drip out, but the material should feel moist. If water drips out, add browns and improve aeration. The ammonia smell means the pile is breaking down too quickly in that spot, and nitrogen is being released as gas rather than being retained in the compost. To fix this, add dry leaves, cardboard, or straw to increase your brown materials. Turn the pile to mix the new browns throughout.

A rotten egg or sulfur smell indicates anaerobic decomposition—the pile lacks oxygen. This is more serious because it means harmful bacteria are dominating the decomposition process. Fix this by turning the pile thoroughly and adding more brown materials to improve structure and air flow. If the pile is very compacted, you might need to fork it apart to break up dense sections. After turning, the smell should improve within a few days if you've addressed the oxygen problem.

A vinegary or sour smell suggests excess moisture. Add brown materials like leaves or cardboard to absorb water, and improve drainage if possible. Turn the pile more frequently to encourage evaporation.
