Bile needs to reach the small intestine at the same time food does, so fats can be broken down and absorbed efficiently. This coordination happens automatically through hormonal signals and nerve responses.

In the small intestine, bile mixes with food and other digestive juices. The bile acids surround fat droplets and break them into even smaller pieces—a process called emulsification. This increases the surface area of fat, allowing digestive enzymes called lipases to break the fat molecules into smaller components that can be absorbed through the intestinal wall. After the bile has done its job, most of the bile acids are reabsorbed in the last part of the small intestine and returned to the liver through the blood.
