Understanding What a VPN Does and Why You Might Turn It Off

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is software that creates an encrypted connection between your device and the internet. When you use a VPN, your internet service provider (ISP) cannot see which websites you visit, and websites cannot easily identify your actual location. The VPN routes your traffic through servers in other locations, masking your real IP address.

According to research from Statista, VPN usage has grown significantly, with approximately 35% of internet users worldwide using a VPN at least monthly as of 2023. People use VPNs for various reasons: protecting their privacy on public Wi-Fi networks, accessing content restricted to certain regions, or preventing advertisers from tracking their browsing habits.

However, there are legitimate situations where you might want to turn off your VPN. Some websites block traffic from VPN servers because they want to verify your actual location or prevent account sharing. Banks and financial institutions sometimes require you to disable VPN protection to access your account. Streaming services like Netflix or Hulu may restrict access when a VPN is active. Additionally, using a VPN can slow down your internet connection by 10-30%, depending on your VPN provider and server location, so you might disable it when you need maximum speed for video conferencing or gaming.

Understanding when and why to turn off your VPN helps you manage your privacy settings intentionally. Before disabling your VPN, consider what you're about to do and whether your regular internet connection is secure enough for that activity.

Turning Off a VPN on Windows Devices

Windows computers typically run VPN software through one of two methods: either through the built-in VPN client in Windows Settings, or through a third-party VPN application like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or CyberGhost. The process differs slightly depending on which method you use.

To disable a VPN using Windows Settings, first open the Settings application by pressing the Windows key and typing "Settings," then pressing Enter. Navigate to "Network & Internet" in the left sidebar. Click on "VPN" to see all configured VPN connections. Find the VPN you want to disconnect and click on it. A menu will appear with a "Disconnect" button. Click this button to immediately stop the VPN connection. You should see the connection status change from "Connected" to "Not connected."

If you're using a third-party VPN application, look for an icon in your system tray (the small icons in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar). Right-click on the VPN application icon or open the application window directly. Most VPN applications display a large connect/disconnect toggle button. Click this button to turn off the VPN. Some applications may require you to click a "Disconnect" button or choose "Turn Off" from a menu. After disconnecting, the application should show a status indicating you're no longer connected.

To verify that your VPN is truly off, you can check your IP address before and after disconnecting. Visit a website like whatismyipaddress.com. When your VPN is connected, you'll see a different IP address than your actual one. After disconnecting, the site will show your real IP address. This confirms the VPN is no longer active and your internet traffic is flowing through your regular connection.

Disabling VPN on Apple Devices and Mac Computers

Apple devices including iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers can run VPNs through both built-in settings and third-party applications. The process for turning off a VPN on Apple devices is straightforward but differs between devices.

On iPhone or iPad, open the Settings application and tap "VPN" in the main menu. If you don't see a VPN option immediately, navigate to "General" first, then scroll down to find "VPN." You'll see any configured VPN connections listed. Tap the information icon (a small circle with an "i" inside) next to your VPN. On the next screen, you'll see a toggle switch labeled "Connect On Demand" or similar options. Toggle this switch to the off position. The VPN should disconnect immediately. To reconnect later, simply toggle it back on.

For third-party VPN applications on iPhones and iPads, open the VPN app from your home screen. Most apps display a large on/off toggle prominently. Tap this toggle to switch it from on to off. You may see a pop-up asking you to confirm the disconnection. After confirming, the app should show a status indicating you're disconnected.

On Mac computers, open System Preferences by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "System Preferences" or "System Settings" (depending on your macOS version). Click "Network" in the preferences window. In the left sidebar, select your VPN connection. Click the "Disconnect" button to stop the VPN. Alternatively, if you're using a third-party VPN application on Mac, locate the application in your menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the VPN icon and select "Disconnect" from the dropdown menu.

Removing VPN from Android and Mobile Devices

Android devices offer built-in VPN functionality through their native settings, and many users also install third-party VPN applications. The method for turning off a VPN on Android depends on whether you configured it through Settings or through an app.

To disable a VPN configured through Android Settings, open the Settings application. Navigate to "Network & Internet" or "Connections" (the exact wording varies by manufacturer and Android version). Select "VPN" from the menu. You'll see a list of configured VPNs. Tap the VPN you want to disconnect, and a details screen will appear. Select "Disconnect" or toggle off the connection. The VPN should immediately disconnect, and your device will return to using your mobile carrier's connection or local Wi-Fi without VPN protection.

For third-party VPN applications, open the specific VPN app you installed. These applications typically display a prominent power button or toggle switch on the main screen. The button usually shows the connection status, such as "Connected" or "Disconnected." Tap this button to switch the VPN off. Some apps may require you to confirm the disconnection action. Once confirmed, the app will show that it's disconnected from the VPN service.

Some modern VPN applications, particularly on Android, offer "Always On VPN" features that automatically reconnect whenever your device connects to the internet. If you find your VPN keeps reconnecting even after you disconnect, you may need to disable this feature. Go back to your Android Settings, find the VPN settings, and look for an "Always On VPN" toggle. Disable this option to prevent automatic reconnection. This prevents the VPN from reactivating unless you manually turn it back on.

Completely Removing VPN Applications and Settings

Simply disconnecting a VPN is different from fully removing it from your device. If you've decided you no longer want to use a VPN service at all, you may want to uninstall third-party VPN applications and remove any VPN configurations from your device settings.

On Windows, to remove a third-party VPN application, open Control Panel and navigate to "Programs and Features" or "Add or Remove Programs." Find your VPN application in the list and click on it. Select "Uninstall" and follow the prompts to completely remove the software. For built-in Windows VPN configurations, return to Settings, Network & Internet, and VPN. Right-click on the VPN connection and select "Remove" or "Delete."

On Mac computers, locate the VPN application in your Applications folder (usually found in Finder under "Applications"). Right-click on the VPN application and select "Move to Trash." To remove built-in VPN configurations on Mac, go to System Settings, Network, and select your VPN connection. Click the minus button to remove it from your list of saved networks.

On iPhone or iPad, locate the VPN app on your home screen, press and hold the app icon, and select "Remove App" from the menu. Confirm that you want to remove it. Additionally, go to Settings, General, VPN, and tap the information icon next to any VPN profiles. Select "Delete VPN" to remove the configuration. To remove VPN restrictions for specific apps, go to Settings, Apps, and check if any individual applications have VPN-specific permissions that need adjustment.

On Android, open Settings, go to Apps or Application Manager, find your
