Plastic pots work but retain moisture longer since they do not allow evaporation. Indoor window light typically ranges from 250 to 2,500 lux depending on window direction and weather. This difference means succulents adapted to intense outdoor sun may not receive enough light indoors, even with access to windows. Signs of insufficient light include pale leaf color, leaves that feel thin rather than thick, and elongated growth toward the light source.

Some succulents tolerate lower light than others. Jade plants, some echeveria varieties, and certain sedums can manage in moderate indoor light. Haworthia and gasteria are among the few succulents that actually prefer partial shade. However, even these tolerant varieties perform better with brighter conditions. When light is limiting, water even less frequently than usual, since the plant uses water more slowly in low light.

Rotating succulents regularly ensures even growth on all sides. Turning the pot one-quarter turn every week or two prevents plants from growing lopsided toward the light. If you notice your succulent stretching toward light, this is a sign to increase light exposure or move the plant closer to a window.
