Wood glue works by penetrating into the wood fibers and forming a chemical bond as water evaporates from the adhesive. This process happens in stages. First, the glue becomes tacky, then it sets to a point where you can move or handle the joint, and finally it reaches full cure strength. Each stage has different timing requirements depending on the type of glue, wood species, temperature, humidity, and air circulation in your work area.

Most woodworkers confuse "dry to the touch" with "ready to use" and "fully cured." These are three different states. Dry to the touch means the surface has hardened enough that you won't get glue on your hands, but the interior is still soft. Ready to use means you can remove clamps and work with the joint without damaging the bond. Fully cured means the glue has reached maximum strength, typically several times stronger than the initial set point.

The type of wood you're bonding also matters significantly. Softwoods like pine and cedar absorb glue differently than hardwoods like oak and maple. End grain absorbs much more glue than face grain, which can affect drying times. When you glue end grain, you may need extra clamp time because the wood absorbs moisture from the glue more quickly, potentially starving the joint of adhesive.

Two-part epoxy wood glue, such as System Three or West System, offers extreme strength and water resistance. Epoxy typically has an open time of 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the specific product. Clamp time ranges from two to eight hours depending on temperature and the epoxy system used. Full cure can take anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks. Epoxy is more expensive than other glues but excels at bonding difficult woods, filling gaps, and creating waterproof joints.

Polyurethane glue, like Gorilla Glue, works differently than other wood glues. It requires moisture to cure and expands as it dries, which helps fill gaps but means you need less glue. Polyurethane glue needs to be clamped for about two to four hours, with full cure taking 24 hours. It's extremely strong and waterproof, making it suitable for outdoor use. The main drawback is that it can be messy to work with and requires careful cleanup.

Many glues also have a minimum temperature below which they won't cure properly at all. Most wood glues require at least 50°F (10°C) to cure, and some need 55°F or higher. If your shop is colder than this threshold, the glue essentially won't set regardless of how long you wait.

Conversely, in a warm shop at 90°F (32°C), yellow glue might set in just 12 hours or less. In very hot conditions like 100°F (38°C), it could set in six to eight hours. This speed can actually be problematic because you have less time to assemble pieces and adjust joints before the glue becomes too thick. Some glues also have maximum temperature limits. Exceeding these temperatures can cause the glue to set too quickly or not develop proper strength.

The relationship between temperature and drying time isn't perfectly linear for all glues. Some glues, particularly polyurethane-based products, are less sensitive to temperature changes than others. Epoxy glues vary widely depending on their formulation. Fast-set epoxies might cure in 30 minutes regardless of temperature (within reason), while slow-set epoxies follow temperature-dependent curing more closely.
