Beyond the common housefly, you may encounter fruit flies (Drosophila species) and drain flies (Psychodidae family) in your home. Fruit flies are tiny—just 1/8 inch long—with tan or brownish bodies and distinctive red eyes. They're attracted to fermenting fruits and vegetables and can reproduce even faster than houseflies, with a generation cycle of only 8 to 10 days. Drain flies are similar in size to fruit flies but have a fuzzy appearance and are typically found near moisture sources like drains, garbage disposals, and standing water.
Understanding which type of fly you're facing matters because it determines where they're breeding and what conditions they need to survive. Houseflies prefer decaying organic matter, animal waste, and garbage. Fruit flies seek out fermenting produce and sugary liquids. Move the refrigerator, stove, and microwave and sweep or vacuum accumulated crumbs and debris. Pay special attention to gaps where food particles collect. Wipe down the interior surfaces of your refrigerator, including the drip pan at the bottom, which often contains stagnant water and food debris—an ideal breeding ground for flies. Clean the interior of your garbage disposal by running hot water and ice cubes through it, followed by a commercial drain cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. This removes the biofilm where drain fly larvae develop.
Drain cleaning deserves particular attention. Pour boiling water down kitchen drains weekly to flush away organic buildup. For drains that harbor flies, use a drain brush or plumbing snake to physically scrub the inside of the drain pipe, removing the slimy biofilm. After scrubbing, follow with boiling water. A mixture of half a cup of baking soda poured down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar, can break down buildup and is safe for most plumbing. Let this sit for 30 minutes before flushing with hot water. This process may need to be repeated weekly until drain fly activity ceases. Do not neglect less-obvious drains: floor drains in basements, shower drains, and overflow holes in bathroom sinks all harbor breeding populations.
Garbage management is critical. Take out trash daily or at minimum every two days, especially during warm months. Rinse food containers before placing them in the trash to remove residual food and liquids. If you have a compost bin, ensure it's located outside and properly maintained with a tight-fitting lid. Do not compost meat, dairy, or oily foods, which attract flies more readily than vegetable matter.
