They prefer moist environments and are often found in damaged wood, bathrooms, and crawl spaces. A single carpenter ant colony can contain thousands of workers and may take several years to establish significant structural damage.

Odorous house ants are smaller, measuring only 2 to 3 millimeters. They earned their name because they emit a distinct rotten coconut smell when crushed. These ants form massive colonies with multiple queens, making them particularly challenging to control. They leave visible chemical trails that other ants follow, which is why you often see them marching in organized lines.

Pharaoh ants, approximately 1.5 to 2 millimeters long, present a unique problem. They are attracted to warm environments and commonly infest hospitals, restaurants, and homes. These ants can split colonies when threatened, meaning improper treatment may actually increase the infestation rather than reduce it.

Understanding ant behavior is crucial for effective control. Ants communicate through pheromone trails, and they constantly forage for food and water. Common entry points include cracks in foundations, gaps around windows and doors, spaces where utility lines enter the home, and holes in siding or trim. Seal these openings with caulk, weatherstripping, or foam sealant. Pay special attention to areas where utilities pass through walls.

Outdoor management is equally important. Remove debris piles, trim tree branches that touch your roof, and eliminate standing water in gutters and downspouts. Keep firewood stacks away from the home, as carpenter ants commonly nest in stored wood. Landscape mulch should be at least six inches away from the foundation.

The key to successful baiting is timing and patience. Results typically appear within 3 to 7 days, though complete colony elimination may take 1 to 2 weeks. During this period, you may actually see more ants as they become attracted to the bait. This is a positive sign indicating that the bait is working. Resist the urge to clean up ant trails or use insecticide sprays during this critical period, as doing so will disrupt the bait's effectiveness.

Placement is critical. Observe ant trails during daylight hours and place baits along these paths. Ants prefer to follow established routes, and baits positioned along these trails will be discovered and collected rapidly. Place multiple baits in different areas to increase the likelihood that ants will find them. DE is effective but works more slowly than other methods, typically requiring 24 to 48 hours to show results. It also loses effectiveness when wet, so it must be reapplied after rain or cleaning.

Boric acid-based dusts are more potent than diatomaceous earth but require careful handling. They should never be applied in areas accessible to children or pets. Boric acid affects the ant's nervous system and is highly effective against most ant species. When using boric acid products, apply thin layers in wall voids, under baseboards, and behind appliances where ants nest.

Application technique determines effectiveness. Dusts should be applied sparingly—a light coating is more effective than a heavy application.
