Results below 0.40 typically require urgent evaluation and treatment planning with a vascular surgeon or cardiologist.

In rare cases, an ABI above 1.40 may indicate calcified, stiff arteries that don't compress normally under cuff pressure. This pattern, sometimes called medial calcific sclerosis, is associated with chronic kidney disease and diabetes and requires different follow-up testing.

It's important to understand that a single ABI test result provides a snapshot in time.
