For example, if your ring weighs 10 grams and displaces 0.5 milliliters of water, the density would be 10 ÷ 0.5 = 20 grams per cubic centimeter. This is very close to pure gold's density of 19.3, suggesting high gold content. A piece of 14K gold should have a density around 13.5 to 14.0 grams per cubic centimeter.

The water displacement method works well for solid items but becomes difficult with hollow jewelry like some bracelets or pendants. Also, items with gemstones, enameling, or other materials will give inaccurate readings because you're measuring the density of everything together, not just the gold. This method is most reliable for simple gold items without additions.

An important consideration is that the acid test requires making a permanent mark on your item. For jewelry you plan to keep and wear, this might be unacceptable. The scratch is usually small and hidden, but it's still damage. Additionally, acid is caustic and requires careful handling.
