The glass surface is durable but can scratch easily, and certain cleaning methods can cause permanent damage. This type of cooktop requires gentler handling and specific cleaning products designed for glass surfaces.

Gas stovetops with grates have been used for over a century and remain popular because they offer responsive heat control. The grates rest on top of the cooktop, and there is a burner head underneath. Gas stovetops have more crevices and areas where food can accumulate compared to smooth-top models. The grates themselves are typically cast iron or stainless steel and can handle more aggressive cleaning.

Induction cooktops are newer technology that use magnetic fields to heat cookware directly. The surface itself stays relatively cool, which prevents some types of spills from burning on. However, never attempt to clean a stovetop that is actively hot, as you risk burning yourself. Allow the surface to cool enough that you can safely touch it. This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes after you've turned off your burners.

For routine daily cleaning, a simple approach works well. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the entire stovetop surface. For stovetops with removable coils or grates, remove these components first and set them aside. For glass or smooth surfaces, wipe in one direction rather than in circles, as this helps prevent streaking. A microfiber cloth works particularly well because it traps grease and doesn't leave lint behind. For gas stovetops with grates, you can wash the grates separately in warm soapy water in your sink.

For stuck-on food or spills that don't come off with water alone, use a small amount of mild dish soap mixed with water. Never use abrasive scrubbers on glass cooktops, as even tiny scratches can spread over time. Instead, use the soft side of a sponge or a cloth. For stainless steel surfaces, you can use a cloth slightly dampened with white vinegar, which cuts through grease and helps prevent water spots. Wipe up any moisture with a dry cloth at the end to prevent water marks. Addressing Burnt-On Food and Stubborn Stains

Despite your best efforts at daily maintenance, burnt-on food and stubborn stains will occasionally develop on your stovetop. Learning how to remove these without damaging the surface underneath is an important skill for any cook. The method you use depends on your stovetop material and the nature of the stain. Some substances respond to specific solutions, while others require mechanical removal through gentle scrubbing.

For glass or smooth-top cooktops, baking soda is a reliable option for burnt-on food. Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste that you can spread directly onto the stain. Let this paste sit for 15 to 30 minutes to allow the baking soda to soften the burnt material. Then, using a non-abrasive cloth or the soft side of a sponge, gently rub the area in circular motions. The baking soda acts as a very mild abrasive that removes buildup without scratching the glass. After the stain is gone, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.

White vinegar is another option for glass cooktops and works particularly well on grease and mineral deposits. Spray white vinegar directly onto the problem area and let it sit for a minute or two. The acidity in vinegar breaks down grease and mineral buildup. Wipe with a soft cloth, and the debris should come away easily. For stubborn stains, you can apply vinegar, let it sit longer, then sprinkle baking soda on top. The combination of these two substances creates a mild fizzing action that helps lift burnt food off the surface. For gas cooktops with cast iron grates, a slightly more aggressive approach is acceptable. Cast iron can handle scrubbing with a stiff brush or steel wool. Soak the grates in hot water and dish soap for 30 minutes to soften stuck-on food, then scrub with a brush. For really stubborn burnt-on food, you can use a small amount of oven cleaner on the grates themselves (not on the cooktop surface), following the product instructions carefully. Always rinse thoroughly and dry the grates completely before replacing them on the cooktop. For stainless steel surfaces, avoid steel wool as it can leave marks. Instead, use a cloth with a bit of white vinegar or a stainless steel cleaner applied in the direction of the grain.

For electric coil burners, the removable nature of the coils makes cleaning easier. Lift out the coils and soak them in hot soapy water for 30 minutes. A stiff brush can remove burnt-on debris from the coil. Never submerge the coils completely if they have electrical connections, and never force them if they seem stuck. The frequency of deep cleaning depends on how often you cook and the types of foods you prepare. Heavy cooking with oils and spices typically requires deeper cleaning every one to two weeks, while lighter cooking might only need deep cleaning monthly. Understanding the right technique for your specific stovetop type ensures you achieve thorough results without causing damage.

Glass cooktops benefit from a dedicated glass cooktop cleaner, which is specifically formulated to clean these surfaces without scratching or streaking. These products are inexpensive and widely available at grocery stores and online retailers.
