You typically only see them when conditions are right for them to reproduce, usually during wet weather in spring, summer, or fall.

The fungi that produce mushrooms play an important role in breaking down dead plant material, wood chips, and thatch in your lawn. This decomposition process returns nutrients to the soil. However, when mushroom fruiting bodies appear frequently or in large numbers, many homeowners want to reduce them for aesthetic reasons or because children or pets might be tempted to touch or eat them.

Several factors encourage mushroom growth. Excessive moisture is the primary trigger—lawns that stay wet for extended periods after rain or irrigation create ideal conditions. Shaded areas with poor air circulation tend to have more mushrooms than sunny, well-drained spots. Lawns with thick thatch (the layer of dead grass between living grass and soil) provide an excellent food source for fungi. Wood chips, mulch, or buried wood debris in or near your lawn will continue feeding fungal growth for years. Compacted soil that doesn't drain well also promotes mushroom fruiting.

The fungus will likely produce new mushrooms in the same spot if conditions remain favorable. However, regular removal prevents mushrooms from spreading spores and reduces the number of fruiting bodies in your yard. Many people find this approach worthwhile because it's chemical-free and works within days.

When removing mushrooms, timing matters. Early morning is ideal because mushrooms are firmer and less likely to crumble, which could spread spores. Wear gloves if you prefer not to touch the mushrooms directly. Place removed mushrooms in a bag and dispose of them in your regular trash—do not compost them if you're concerned about spore spread. Some people repeat removal weekly during peak mushroom season to keep their lawn looking neat.

For larger infestations, a few tools make the job easier. A long-handled weeding fork or similar tool lets you remove clusters without bending. A lawn vacuum or shop vacuum can collect mushrooms from a large area quickly. For moderate low spots, you can build up the area with quality topsoil mixed with sand to improve drainage while raising the surface.

Compacted soil is a major drainage problem. When soil becomes compressed from foot traffic or equipment, water cannot penetrate easily and sits on the surface or just below it. Watering deeply two or three times per week encourages roots to grow deeper while allowing the surface to dry between waterings. In most climates, lawns need about one inch of water per week from rainfall and irrigation combined. Adjust based on your local weather.

If mushroom problems are severe and concentrated in specific areas, you might consider installing a French drain or similar subsurface drainage system, though this is a more involved project. For most homeowners, regular aeration and adjusted watering habits produce noticeable improvement within one growing season.

Collect it with a rake, lawn vacuum, or by hand and dispose of it away from your lawn area. This cleanup step is essential to the effectiveness of thatch removal.

Buried wood debris is another major fungal food source. Leftover wood chips, old tree stumps, roots, or lumber pieces buried in your yard will continue supporting mushroom fruiting for many years. If you know where wood debris is located, removing it eliminates that food source permanently. Sometimes you discover buried wood only when you dig in your yard for other reasons. When found, remove it or consider leaving it undisturbed if it's deep and won't interfere with lawn care.

If you use wood mulch around trees or garden beds near your lawn, mushrooms may grow at the mulch-lawn border. This is normal—mushrooms are decomposing the mulch as intended. You can reduce this by maintaining clear separation between mulch areas and lawn, keeping mulch at least a few inches away from grass edges.
