Some people find that letting the jar sit on the counter for just five to ten minutes after removing it from the freezer—enough to let the very outer layer of wax warm slightly—creates a helpful contrast between the extremely cold interior and slightly warmer exterior.

It's important to use plastic or wooden scrapers rather than metal tools, as metal can scratch or chip the glass. Avoid using excessive force, as this can cause the scraper to slip and damage the jar or your hands. If you have a glass jar you want to reuse, patience during this process ensures you won't compromise its condition.

At this point, you can pour the melted wax into a container lined with newspaper or pour it directly into a sink with a drain strainer (to prevent wax from clogging pipes). The remaining thin film of wax can be wiped away with a soft cloth while it's still warm. If any wax residue remains, repeat the hot water soak and wipe process.

A variation on this method involves using a hair dryer on medium heat. Hold the dryer four to six inches from the jar and move it around the exterior, heating all sides evenly. After thirty seconds to one minute, the wax should be warm enough to peel away from the edges. This method offers more control than immersing the jar in water, making it suitable for jars with paper labels or decorative elements you want to preserve.

Boiling water can work, but it poses burn risks and may be overkill for most situations. Never place a cold glass jar directly into boiling water, as the rapid temperature change can cause thermal shock and crack the glass. Instead, place the jar in warm water and gradually increase the temperature, or use water that's very hot but not actively boiling.

Dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol and rub the wax-covered area with moderate pressure. The alcohol helps the wax release from the glass surface. This method is especially useful for removing waxy residue from the outside of jars where wax may have dripped during burning.

For combination approach, some people apply oil first to soften the wax, then use rubbing alcohol to remove the oily residue that remains. This two-step process can leave glass cleaner than using either substance alone. Vinegar mixed with water in equal parts can also help remove residual wax film, though it works more slowly than oil or alcohol solutions.

These methods require patience but produce minimal mess and no risk of thermal shock to the glass. They're ideal if you've already removed most of the wax using another method and just need to tackle stubborn residue or cleanup.
