These clay containers have porous walls that allow air to pass through, helping soil dry out more quickly than plastic containers. A 6-inch terracotta pot typically allows soil to dry completely within 5-7 days under normal indoor conditions. Ceramic pots with a glazed finish work well too, though they dry out more slowly than unglazed terracotta. Plastic containers retain moisture longer, which can work if you're careful with watering frequency, but they offer less breathability than clay options.

Drainage holes are absolutely essential—non-negotiable, in fact. Succulents cannot thrive without proper drainage. If you fall in love with a decorative pot without drainage holes, you can place a draining pot inside it, creating a double-pot system. This way, water drains from the inner pot into the outer one, and you can periodically empty the outer pot to prevent root rot.

Container size matters more than many people realize. A container that's too large relative to the plant holds excess soil that retains moisture unnecessarily. Finally, add one part orchid bark or other organic matter for structure. This 1:2:1 ratio creates a mix that drains within minutes of watering while still holding enough moisture for the plant to absorb water before it drains away.

Many garden centers now sell pre-made succulent soil mixes, which saves time and effort. These commercial mixes typically contain the right balance of drainage materials. However, they vary in quality. Some are excellent, while others contain too much organic matter and retain excessive moisture. If you purchase pre-made mix, look for one that feels noticeably gritty and doesn't compact when you squeeze it.

The type of coarse material you choose affects how the mix performs. Perlite is the most affordable and widely available option. Pumice provides better long-term structure because it doesn't break down as quickly as perlite over months and years. Coarse sand adds weight, which helps stabilize larger plants. Many experienced growers use a combination of these materials rather than relying on just one. For example, mixing one part perlite with one part pumice creates a balanced medium that drains excellently while maintaining some structural integrity.

Most succulents need 1-2 inches of space between individual plants to allow for airflow and prevent moisture from collecting between them.

Gently remove your succulent from its nursery pot. If the soil is tightly compacted around the roots, carefully loosen it with your fingers. This encourages roots to grow into the surrounding soil rather than staying in a tight ball. Some growers use a wooden stick or plant label to gently separate the root ball. If there are any dead or mushy roots (which appear translucent or smell unpleasant), trim these away with clean scissors.

Position the plant in its new container so the base of the plant sits at soil level—not buried deeper than it was in the original pot. Succulents can rot if planted too deeply. Hold the plant gently and add soil around it, pressing lightly to eliminate large air pockets without compacting the soil. Fill until the soil reaches the same level as it did in the original container. Leave about one-half inch between the soil surface and the rim of the container to allow room for water.

After planting, wait 3-5 days before watering. This allows any minor root injuries from the transplanting process to heal. During this waiting period, the plant can adjust to its new environment. When you do water, do so thoroughly until water drains from the bottom—this settles the soil and ensures complete hydration. Then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.

How often you water depends on several factors: the season, your climate, the type of container, the size of the plant, and the soil mix composition. During the growing season (spring and summer), most container succulents need watering every 2-3 weeks. In fall and winter, when growth slows, you might water only once a month or even less frequently. A practical test is to stick your finger about one inch into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, the plant is ready for watering. If it still feels moist, wait a few more days.
