Different triggers cause sneezing in different people. Common triggers include allergens like pollen, pet dander, and dust mites. Viral infections, including the common cold and flu, frequently cause sneezing. Some people sneeze when exposed to bright light, a condition called photic sneezing. Others sneeze when they suddenly move from a dark place to bright sunlight. Even eating large meals or sudden temperature changes can trigger sneezing in some individuals.

Understanding why you sneeze helps you identify your personal triggers. Keep a simple log for one week noting when you sneeze most frequently and what you were doing at that time. This information can reveal patterns—for example, you might notice you sneeze more in the morning, after being outdoors, or when near certain animals. Once you identify your triggers, you can take steps to reduce your exposure to them, which often reduces sneezing frequency.

A runny nose, medically called rhinorrhea, happens when your nasal passages produce excess mucus. This mucus drains from your nose as a clear or slightly cloudy liquid. Allergies are one of the most common causes of runny nose. When you inhale allergens—substances your immune system reacts to—your nasal tissues release chemicals called histamines. Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds typically triggers spring and fall allergies. Year-round allergens include pet dander, dust mites, and mold spores.

Viral infections cause runny nose by triggering inflammation in your nasal passages. The common cold, caused by rhinoviruses, affects most adults 2 to 3 times per year. Cold viruses cause your nose to produce excess mucus as your immune system fights the infection. The runny nose typically starts as clear mucus but may become thicker and more yellow or green over several days as the infection progresses.

Other causes of runny nose include environmental irritants like cigarette smoke, strong perfumes, and air pollution. Temperature changes can trigger runny nose—this is why many people experience nasal congestion or drainage when moving from heated indoor spaces to cold outdoor air. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause runny nose, a condition called pregnancy rhinitis. To manage runny nose effectively, identify the underlying cause. Note when your runny nose occurs and what you were exposed to beforehand. Practical Strategies for Reducing Sneezing

Several practical approaches can reduce sneezing frequency without medication. The first strategy is controlling your environment to minimize exposure to known triggers. If pollen causes your sneezing, keep windows closed during high pollen count days, typically spring and early fall. Use air conditioning with clean filters instead. Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors to remove pollen from your body and hair. Wash your hair before bed to prevent transferring pollen to your pillow.

For dust mite allergies, which affect many people year-round, wash bedding weekly in hot water. Use dust mite-proof pillow and mattress covers. Vacuum carpeted areas twice weekly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which traps small particles. Reduce clutter in your bedroom where dust accumulates. If you have pets that trigger sneezing, keep them out of your bedroom and bathe them regularly to reduce dander.

Keeping your nasal passages moist helps reduce sneezing. Use a saline nasal spray or rinse several times daily. A saline rinse involves directing salt water solution through your nasal passages to clear irritants and mucus. You can purchase saline rinses at any pharmacy, or make one at home using 1/4 teaspoon salt mixed in 8 ounces of warm water. Saline rinses are safe for daily use and don't contain medications.

Humidity levels in your environment affect sneezing. During winter when indoor air becomes very dry, use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Aim for humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent. Dry air irritates nasal passages and triggers more sneezing. Conversely, very high humidity can promote mold growth, so excessive humidity can worsen symptoms for some people. A hygrometer, an inexpensive device that measures humidity, helps you maintain optimal levels.

Fill the device with saline solution, tilt your head over a sink, insert the spout gently into one nostril, and allow the solution to flow through your nasal passages and out the other nostril. Use this method once or twice daily during symptomatic periods.

Keeping tissues readily available during times when runny nose is most bothersome helps you manage drainage. Carry a small pack of tissues in your pocket or bag. Some tissues contain lotion, which can be gentler on the tender skin around your nose that becomes irritated from frequent wiping. If your nose becomes sore from constant wiping, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or fragrance-free moisturizer around your nostrils to protect the skin.

Decongestant medications available over-the-counter can temporarily relieve runny nose by reducing swelling in nasal passages. Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine are common decongestant active ingredients. However, these medications are most effective for congestion rather than actual runny nose. Additionally, nasal decongestant sprays can cause rebound congestion if used for more than three consecutive days, meaning your symptoms worsen when you stop using them. Read package directions carefully before using any decongestant medication.

Antihistamine medications reduce runny nose caused by allergies. These medications block histamine, the chemical your immune system releases during allergic reactions. Common over-the-counter antihistamines include cetirizine, loratadine, and fexofenadine. Unlike older antihistamines, these newer formulations are less likely to cause drowsiness. Antihistamines work best when taken before you're exposed to allergens, so if you know high pollen days are coming, taking an antihistamine preventatively may reduce symptoms.
