The Web's killer feature was the hyperlink—the ability to click on text and jump to another page, either on the same website or on a completely different site across the world. This made information easy to explore and discover. When the Mosaic browser launched in 1993, it made the Web visual by showing images alongside text, which made it much more appealing to regular people. Suddenly, the internet wasn't just for scientists and programmers anymore. Regular people wanted to get online to see what this "Web" thing was about. The number of websites grew from a few hundred in 1993 to millions by the year 2000.

They also run complex applications—programs like Google Docs, Spotify, and Figma run entirely in your browser without needing to be installed on your computer. Browsers handle encryption so that sensitive information like credit card numbers can be transmitted securely. The lock icon you see next to secure websites indicates that your connection to that site is encrypted using HTTPS (the "S" stands for "Secure"). Without this protection, hackers on your network could see everything you send.
