Before you can draw muscles convincingly, you need to understand how they're organized in the human body. Muscles make up about 40% of an adult's body weight and work in groups to create movement. Learning the names and locations of major muscles gives your drawings anatomical accuracy and helps them look more realistic.
The human body contains over 600 muscles, but for drawing purposes, you only need to focus on the ones visible on the surface—called superficial muscles. These are the muscles you can see under the skin when someone flexes or moves. The major muscle groups include the deltoids (shoulders), pectoralis major (chest), rectus abdominis (abs), latissimus dorsi (back), biceps and triceps (arms), and quadriceps and hamstrings (legs).
Understanding muscle attachment points is crucial. Muscles connect bones to other bones, and they cross joints to create movement. When you know where a muscle attaches at both ends, you can draw it in different poses more accurately. For example, the bicep attaches at the shoulder and elbow, so when someone bends their arm, the bicep shortens and bulges. When the arm straightens, the bicep elongates and flattens.
Each muscle has a distinct shape. The deltoid is triangular, the pectoralis is fan-shaped, and the rectus abdominis has separate segments divided by lines called tendinous inscriptions. These shapes don't change much regardless of pose—they just compress, stretch, or rotate. The same principle applies to leg muscles. The quadriceps (front of thigh) consists of four separate muscles that work together to straighten the leg. When someone straightens their leg forcefully, you see the quadriceps fully engaged with distinct sections visible. When the leg bends, the quadriceps relaxes and appears softer and less defined. The vastus medialis (inner quadriceps) becomes more prominent when the leg is fully straight, while the vastus lateralis (outer quadriceps) bulges during movements like walking or kicking.
The hamstrings work opposite to the quadriceps. Located on the back of the thigh, they contract when the knee bends. When you draw someone sitting with their leg bent, the hamstrings bunch up and create visible bulges. When the leg extends, the hamstrings thin out and flatten. Many beginning artists miss this—they draw legs the same way regardless of position, which makes poses look unconvincing.
Study reference photos showing the same pose from relaxed and flexed states. Notice how the overall shape of the limb changes, how some muscles become visible while others fade, and how the skin surface becomes more textured where muscles engage. The arm contains several important muscles. The biceps brachii (bicep) has two heads that originate at the shoulder and insert at the forearm. The triceps, on the back of the arm, has three heads and straightens the arm. The brachialis sits underneath the bicep and becomes visible when the bicep is flexed. The forearm contains numerous smaller muscles that control wrist and finger movement—these create the surface texture and form of the forearm rather than prominent bulges.
When drawing an extended arm, you'll notice the bicep appears relatively flat and the tricep is more prominent. When the arm bends, this reverses—the bicep bulges and the tricep stretches and flattens. The brachialis muscle peeks out on the outer edge of the bicep, creating a secondary bulge that adds realism to flexed arms.
Here's a common mistake: drawing the arm as a simple cylinder. Real arms have clear front and back surfaces with distinct muscle groupings. Practice drawing arms at different angles—straight, bent at 45 degrees, fully flexed—and note how the muscle arrangement reveals different information in each position.

These divisions typically create three, four, or six visible sections depending on body composition and development. The muscle runs vertically from the ribs to the pelvis, and the sections are arranged in pairs—you rarely see nine sections or more in natural human development. The linea alba, a vertical line running down the center, bisects the abdomen and provides a crucial symmetry line when drawing.
The external obliques run diagonally from the ribs to the pelvis on each side of the body. These muscles create the V-shaped lines that lead downward toward the groin and are often the most aesthetically striking abdominal feature. When someone flexes sideways or twists, the obliques become prominent. When the torso is relaxed and neutral, they're less visible but still contribute to the overall torso shape.
Body fat percentage dramatically affects how visible these muscles appear. At very low body fat (below 10%), the rectus abdominis sections become extremely defined with deep shadows between them.
