You may also notice a musty, unpleasant odor in heavily infested areas—this smell comes from cockroach pheromones and fecal matter.

Sticky traps or roach monitors are inexpensive tools that catch cockroaches as they move through your home. Place these traps along baseboards, under sinks, behind appliances, and in other suspected activity areas. After a few days, the trapped roaches tell you where populations are concentrated. Count the roaches in your traps weekly to monitor whether the infestation is growing, staying steady, or declining. Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight; wash them or place them in a closed dishwasher. Take out garbage regularly and use garbage cans with tight-fitting lids. Remove pet food bowls after your pet finishes eating, rather than leaving food available throughout the day. Cockroaches also eat paper, cardboard, glue, and soap, so reduce clutter and store items in sealed containers.

Water is equally important to cockroaches. Fix leaking pipes under sinks, around toilets, and in basements or crawl spaces. Cockroaches need very little water—even the moisture from a dripping faucet can sustain a population. Dry out areas after use; for example, wipe the sink dry before going to bed, and use a squeegee or towel to dry shower walls and tub floors. Ensure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans run during and after showers to reduce humidity. Keep gutters and downspouts clean so water drains away from your home's foundation.

Shelter elimination involves reducing hiding places. Seal cracks and crevices in walls, cabinets, and baseboards with caulk or weatherstripping. Remove cardboard boxes, stacks of newspapers, and other clutter where roaches hide. Move appliances slightly away from walls to eliminate the tight spaces roaches prefer. Keep spaces under and behind kitchen appliances clean and accessible for inspection and treatment. Declutter closets, pantries, and storage areas.

Place small dots of bait along baseboards, in corners, and under sinks. Replace baits every two weeks or as directed on the product label. Effectiveness typically appears within the first week, though complete elimination may take several weeks to two months depending on infestation size.

Roach growth regulators (IGRs) are insecticides that prevent cockroach nymphs from developing into reproductive adults. Products containing pyrethrins or insect growth regulator chemicals disrupt the roach life cycle. Unlike baits that kill roaches on contact, IGRs work over time as the population goes through its natural molting process. Combining IGRs with gel baits often produces better results than using either product alone. IGRs are available as sprays, aerosols, or concentrated liquids you mix with water.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a non-chemical alternative made from fossilized algae. Food-grade DE damages cockroach exoskeletons when they walk through it, causing them to dehydrate and die. DE does not contain poisons, making it safer for homes with children and pets. However, it works slower than chemical baits and requires reapplication after cleaning or water exposure. Dust DE along baseboards, behind appliances, and in other roach pathways, using a small duster or powder applicator to create a thin layer. Wear a dust mask when applying DE to avoid inhaling particles.
