Your computer's performance depends partly on how much RAM you have and how much of that RAM you're actually using at any given time. When you're using programs, watching videos, or running multiple browser tabs, your computer is drawing from this RAM pool.

If your computer feels slow or programs freeze up, it might be because your RAM is running low. When RAM fills up completely, your computer has to use a slower storage area called virtual memory, which makes everything take longer. This is similar to trying to work at a desk that's completely covered with papers—you have nowhere to put new items, so you have to shuffle things around to make space.

You can also check RAM usage on the "Processes" tab in Task Manager. This tab lists every program running on your computer and shows how much RAM each one is using. "Compressed" shows memory that's been squeezed down to make room for other programs. If your Mac has less than 10 percent available memory for extended periods, it will start to slow down. Macs handle memory pressure better than many Windows computers, but severely limited memory still causes problems. When you see high memory usage, you can look at the Memory tab in Activity Monitor to identify which applications are using the most resources. You can close applications you're not actively using to free up memory. To force-close an unresponsive program, select it and click the X button in the top-left corner of the Activity Monitor window.

Another way to check your Mac's memory is through the System Information utility. The numbers also show patterns over time. If you check your RAM usage when you first start your computer, it's typically lower than later in the day.
