Eventually, the old skin splits open along the caterpillar's back, and the new, larger caterpillar wriggles out of the old skin. This entire process may take several hours.
Caterpillars display fascinating defensive behaviors that protect them from predators. Many caterpillars are brightly colored with bold stripes or spots that warn predators they may taste bad or be poisonous. Monarch caterpillars are bright yellow and black, advertising the fact that they contain toxins from the milkweed plants they eat. Some caterpillars have stinging hairs or can spray formic acid as a defense. Others have fake eyespots that make them appear larger or more threatening than they actually are. Some caterpillars simply blend in with their surroundings through camouflage, making them nearly invisible on their host plants.
