The most common worm species used for composting is the red wiggler (Eisenia fetida). These worms are different from garden earthworms. Red wigglers thrive in the warm, moist environment of a compost bin and reproduce quickly. A single red wiggler can produce hundreds of offspring within a few months. They consume their own body weight in organic matter each day, meaning a pound of worms can process about one pound of food scraps daily.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, food scraps and yard waste make up about 30 percent of what Americans throw away. Worm composting offers a way to reduce this waste stream at home. The process works year-round indoors, making it suitable for apartments, small homes, and cold climates where outdoor composting becomes difficult in winter months.

Bacteria and fungi break down organic matter, while worms consume this partially decomposed material. As material passes through a worm's digestive system, it becomes even more broken down and enriched with beneficial microbes. If you prefer a wooden bin, cedar and pine are good choices because they resist decay. Avoid pressure-treated wood, which contains chemicals harmful to worms. A basic wooden bin can measure 12 inches tall, 12 inches wide, and 18 inches long—a size that works for most households. Line the bottom with hardware cloth (metal mesh) to prevent rodents from burrowing in while still allowing drainage and worm movement.

Some people use tiered stacking systems with multiple trays. These systems allow you to harvest finished compost more easily. As you add food waste to the top tray, worms migrate downward toward food, leaving the lower tray ready for harvest. Coconut coir comes from coconut husk fibers and holds moisture well. It's lighter and fluffier than peat moss, making it excellent for aeration. If using coconut coir, moisten it thoroughly before adding to the bin. A standard block of dry coconut coir expands to fill several gallons when moistened. Mix it with other bedding materials at a ratio of about one-third coir to two-thirds shredded paper for balanced results.

Moisture is critical for worm composting success. The bedding should feel like a wrung-out sponge—moist enough to clump slightly when squeezed, but not so wet that water drips out. Worms breathe through their skin, which must stay moist. If bedding dries out, worms will leave or die. If it becomes waterlogged, it prevents oxygen from reaching worms and encourages harmful bacteria. Most people check moisture weekly by squeezing a handful of bedding.

Temperature affects how quickly worms process waste. Worms are most active between 55 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, with optimal conditions around 70 degrees. At cooler temperatures, their metabolism slows and they eat less. At temperatures above 84 degrees, worms may attempt to escape the bin. Maintaining consistent temperature is easier indoors than outdoors, especially in climates with cold winters or hot summers.

When worms arrive, they often seem stressed and sluggish from shipping. Place them in a dark container with moist bedding for a few hours before introducing them to your bin. This acclimation period helps them recover. Pour the worms directly onto the bedding surface, and they'll burrow down into the material within minutes.
